Texas Governor and Lieutenant Governor Clash Over THC Laws

Texas lawmakers are bracing for a political showdown over THC regulations after Governor Greg Abbott vetoed a bill. Governor Abbott called for a special legislative session after vetoing Senate Bill 3, a bill that would ban THC products like Delta-8 and Delta-9 statewide. Instead of an outright ban, Governor Abbott wants lawmakers to focus on regulating these products, a move applauded by veterans groups and small businesses that rely on selling hemp-derived products. However, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick is not pleased. He publicly criticized the veto on social media and reinforced his stance in a press conference, signaling a deeper rift within the Texas Republican Party. Political experts suggest the opposition highlights a significant crack within the party. While some House lawmakers might support the veto, Patrick’s influence in the Senate presents a different challenge. University of Houston Professor Brandon Rottinghaus said: “Lt. Gov. Patrick has been very strong on this issue throughout the session and since the veto. He holds so much power over state senators that if they don’t go along, they could lose a lot of influence in the Senate.” The special session is expected to begin July 21, according to KHOU 11.
